The school re-opened for the second quarter of the year this past week and there was a buzz of excitement when both the boys and staff returned for what promises to be a very exciting term. The start of the term also sees the official start of the winter sports season although many of the teams had been successfully involved in their preparation for the season during the various pre-season festivals this past Easter period. There was, however, a definite change in the school mood this week with all the excitement and hype surrounding the “It is time” initiative hosted by Angus Buchan here in Bloemfontein. We also welcomed Mr. Jannie Moolman, Old Grey who matriculated in 1984, and who is part of the organising committee of this event, to assembly this past Tuesday to tell the boys and staff more about the logistics surrounding this special prayer meeting. His visit coincided with the G4C (Grey for Christ) initiative’s launch at school during which boys of different church denominations will have the opportunity to praise and worship at school on a weekly basis.

Jo Black, who launched the ‘Be that Guy’ movement a couple of years ago, encouraged the boys to be the best versions of themselves, that we are all indeed royalty because God created us and that the boys have the ability to bring about positive change in the world. He, furthermore, encouraged the boys to care and look out for each other and demonstrated this message by telling a slightly adapted version of the Lion King fable in his unique and humorous way. He emphasised that the boys need to create the change that they want to see and remain true to their own identity, as the ‘Simba’ character from the Lion King fable. He reminded the boys that they are all special and that they need to go out in the world and stand up for what is right, in other words, to be that guy and do great things in their lives.

Some of the school’s rugby sides will be participating in the Wildeklawer tournament this coming weekend in Kimberley and parents are encouraged to support the school during this event. The month of May will present the school with exciting opportunities and challenges during some of our annual inter schools’ derbies against traditional boys’ schools and we are certainly looking forward to meet these challenges and the prospect of an exciting winter sports season.
