The Grey ‘Boereorkes' was established by Mrs. Santjie Louw from the Grey Primary school. This was something different and soon they became popular and began performing at various functions. As the boys moved on to high school the existing groups remained. At present Grey Secondary school boasts 2 groups, namely the Grey Senior and the Grey Junior 'Boereorkeste'. These groups are in the capable hands of Dawid Fourie, who is a well known 'Boeremusiekman'.
The Grey Senior 'Boereorkes' is comprised of 5 musicians who play the concertina, piano accordion, drums, rhythm guitar and bass guitar. OFM regional radio often plays music from this group's cd, which was recorded in 2005. In April 2007, the group accompanied the Premier, Mrs. Marshoff, on a tour to the Czech Republic, representing SA during their Freedom Day celebrations.
They obtained an A++ during the Free State Arts competition and were nominated as one of the finalists in the ‘Boeremusiek' category of the South African Traditional Awards.
Last year the Grey Junior ‘Boereorkes' won the national ‘Boereorkes' competition, subsequent to which they were invited to perform on Dozi's "Kom ‘n bietjie binne". This group is comprised of 6 musicians who play the concertina, piano accordion, rhythm guitar, bass guitar, drums and banjo, respectively. In terms of the future, the guys are planning to record a CD within the next year or two.
Grey is privileged to have these talented groups as part of their music department.
