The Grey Band has been a part of the school for a number of years. Initially it was a cadet band which performed during parades, funerals and other school functions such as the matric farewell. Under the guidance of Stuart du Preez the band started participating in Eisteddfods and national competitions like the Fan Fare competition in Cape Town.
As of 2000 the band embarked on a new course when the cadet era came to an end. Under Debbie Brink a group of 15 members was compiled. Instruments included were woodwinds, brass, percussion and electronic instruments such as keyboards and electric guitars. The band focuses on light classical, pop, jazz an especially on "music from the movies". Interest has increased to such an extent over the years that the band now consists of 28 members.
A practice camp is held at the same venue every year. This is something the boys look forward to very much. The spirit and standard of performances have improved steadily over the years. This can be clearly seen in the applause the band receives at events such as the Grey Music Festival and the Affies/Grey Inter Cultural Event.
In 2003 the band featured in a program on youth music filmed by KYKNET.
2001 and 2005 saw the boys as part of the Grey/Oranje band which gave them exposure to the world of symphonic music.
Although the band has obtained several golden awards at Eisteddfods, it does not have a competitive agenda. Fluctuating individual talent makes this a bit difficult. The band nevertheless succeeds in pleasing audiences and flying the Grey banner high. It also creates a feeling of security and belonging for its members.
