Murray House

Murray House for Grade 8 and 9 boys is named after the famous Rev. Andrew Murray, the first rector of Grey College. This hostel was restored without changing the character of the majestic building in any way. It is also a National Monument.

MURRAY HOUSE IS PROUD...  AND WOULD LIKE TO THANK...

Our sincere thanks to the members of staff at Murray House, as well as our parents for making the first day at Murray House on 8 January 2013  a special day.  I’d like to thank Mrs Annette Marais and her kitchen staff for catering at this event and also for making every meal at Grey College a special “home from home” experience.

I would also like to thank Johann from “Iewers Nice” in Reid Street, for the flowers that they’ve supplied on the 8th of January.  Each of our new residents also received a pencil, bookmark and sweets from one of our donors. Even though the Newies cannot wait to go home over the weekends, they have adjusted well in their new environment.

A very special “Thanks” to the mothers of Jomaar and Marnich who supplied and helped to stock our Emergency Kits.  Dr. M. Op’t Hof sponsored and gave a fully supplied Emergency Kit. Murray House would also like to thank Cheré Fourie who made our Easter special, by supplying a cross.  Adam from “Crearie”, a Christian theatre group, spoke to the boys about the true meaning of Easter. We are grateful to the Grey “Mothers who Care” group who came to pray for our hostel.

We are proud of all our boys and would like to mention that Casper Fourie (prefect) - 1st team player, scored one of the winning tries on 03/09/2013 against Hentie Cilliers. Jaco Louw, one of the Newies, broke his arm during the same weekend in a game against Diamantveld, where the score was in favour of Grey:  42-0.  The u/15 A team played some rugby matches during the March holidays and two of the captains, namely Thian and Mario, are residents at Murray House. They are proud about the team’s winning score of 14-3 against Oakdale College.

We are happy to announce that the resident’s kitchen has been upgraded and tiled and the staircase has also been varnished.

I would like to congratulate the following grade 9 boys on winning the “MOST TIDY ROOM” award for the First Term.  They were able to eat out and they set an example to the other residents:  Lucky, Michael (Taljaard), Tseke en Yanga.

Murray House would also like to thank the parent committee, especially Cherie Fourie, Lizette Schoonwinkel, Liezel van Niekerk and Franci Koeglenberg for their commitment and kindness towards the wellbeing and benefit of our residents.

APPLIANCES AND SAFETY MEASUREMENTS:

BOYS are ONLY allowed to have the following  APPLIANCES:

·         cellular telephone charger

·         laptop charger

·         radio / cd player

The reason for this is that other appliances create a fire hazard and are not conducive to the old buildings.

FLU INJECTION

We advise parents to assist their boy(s) to get the flu shot as soon as possible.  This is not compulsory. Matron Nina will inject the boys (free of charge), once it has been bought from the Chemist.  Brandwag Chemist will deliver the Flu shots to Grey College.  Parents who has an account at Brandwag Chemist may call the Chemist to order a flu injection.  It cost around R70 per injection.  You may use the Chemist of your choice.

Die Eerste Kwartaal by Murray-Huis se “melodie” was mooi.  Saam met die uitdagings, die aanpassings en ook die hartseer (Mathew Lahoud se vader is oorlede), het ons seuns saamgestaan om vriendskapsbande te bou en lewenslesse geleer, wat in die toekoms van groot waarde sal wees.

Lester wrote:  “Past, present and future are for the human mind and heart the three dimensions or directions into which the human sense of time extends and which in their togetherness constitute the present moment”.  I am proud to say that our boys stand as one in union.  Even though they all share a different past and came from different parts of our country, they  made friends at Grey. We also welcome a new member to our hostel from the United Kingdom this year and like in the past we also welcome boys from as far as Botswana and Namibia.  I would like to encourge each of our boys to keep on dreaming and to keep on believing in themselves, as they form an essencial part of the future of our Country. I am looking forward to share important news and maybe even some “hostel gossip” in the next few newsletters with you.
