JAARVERSLAG/ANNUAL REPORT 2009

INLEIDING

Grey en al sy rolspelers het n suksesvolle 2009 beleef! Dit kan inderdaad die eerste sin van elke jaarverslag van hierdie groot skool wees.

It is a privilege to present this annual report as it is a privilege to be involved in the day to day activities and planning of our beloved school… success does not come naturally and therefore we have to do what we do daily to the best of our ability. But we also have to look to tomorrow and the days and weeks and months to follow. There is no limit to an upward curve and we must improve every day.

Vooruitgang is slegs moontlik as elke rolspeler die regte positiewe gesindheid openbaar en met oorgawe diens lewer. Ons kan hoog opgee oor ons liefde en lojaliteit teenoor Grey, maar ons van Grey se dade moet ons gevoelens vir Grey ten toon stel. Hoe ons mekaar hanteer, hoe ons ander mense en hul probleme hanteer, is bepalend van wie ons is en wat ons as belangrik ag.

George Bernard Shaw once wrote: “This is the true joy of life, the being used up for a purpose recognized by yourself as a mighty one; being a force of nature instead of a feverish, selfish little clot of ailments and grievances, complaining that the world will not devote itself to making you happy.”

Negativity can never be part of the makeup of any one associated with Grey. Complaints and gossip can never build a stronger Grey and a better society. The Grey Way is a positive, resilient, forward-thinking way of dealing with challenges and with people. In his book, “The Starbucks Experience” Joseph Michelli, describes the success story of the Starbucks coffee empire which keeps expanding across the globe. Their core ways of being include: “be welcoming”, “be genuine”, be knowledgeable”, “be considerate’, “be involved”. If Grey people conform to these ways, they will want to do the right thing, they will want to create and offer quality things, they will want to do good in the world. And if you give them the opportunity and the resources to do so, they will shine. Grey has all the requisite resources, including the resource of good people. Grey is a HUMAN company and requires emotional connections.Let us all shine!

Grey moet mense aantrek, laat voel dat hulle hier behoort, dat hul bydrae raakgesien en waardeer word. In die weerlig-vinnige tyd waarin ons leef, het Grey geen toekoms as elkeen probeer om met die minimum weg te kom nie. Ons kan nie maar bloot ons dag-tot-dag aktiwiteite nakom nie; ons moet bele in aandagtige, kreatiewe, passievolle energie. Ons moet meer doen as wat van ons verwag word deur onsself ten volle te laat opgaan in die moontlikhede wat ons omring… By Grey moet ALLES wat ons doen, saak maak vir almal van ons, anders word ons almal verskraal.

The Grey brand is universally recognized and respected. But it can be weakened if we accept slightly lesser quality which then in time becomes the norm. The facilities may still look the same, but our “customers’” experiences begin to slip. We must never allow the Grey norm to slip! THE GREY BRAND IS NOTHING MORE THAN THE SUM TOTAL OMax Lamberti of Massmart said the following which applies to Grey and to us concerning the vital aspects of a successful life:
  1. THIS IS MY LIFE. All of us should be serious about our role at Grey; should realise the importance of a broad-based, balanced education; should be aware of challenges facing us. should be aware of challenges facing us.
    Elkeen van ons moet ook besef : “dit is my lewe”, dit is my toekoms wat op die spel is, dit is my bydrae wat my toekoms en die skool se toekoms direk raak. My interaksie met personeel, Grey seuns, buitestaanders; my toewyding, my voorbeeld, moet positief wees en bydra tot n beter Grey.
  2. THIS IS MY ROAD. Grey is firmly on course to the future and adapts to challenging times by building on traditions like parallel medium education, loyalty, moderation, success in all endeavours

    Grey se mense moet ook elkeen op sy eie toekomspad as volwaardige individu beweeg en Grey se padtekens as sy eie ervaar en beleef. Want ons wat aan Grey verbonde is, se pad word immers binne die Grey raamwerk uitgekap.
  3. THIS IS MY REPUTATION. Grey se reputasie is oor meer as 150 jaar opgebou en word steeds uitgebou. Hierdie reputasie is gebou op STABILIS en is ononderhandelbaar. Elke lid van die Grey-familie dra tot hierdie reputasie by en n enkele negatiewe gebaar raak die reputasie van die hele Grey.

    Each and every member of the Grey family must constantly and consistently safeguard his reputation because that is what will carry him through tough times. Be proud, butbe humble; be honest, be respectful, be grateful, be caring. Maintain a sense of balance and of humour!

    It is my life. It is my road. It is my reputation. But it has an influence on all who come into contact with me.

STAFF

One of the reasons for the continuing success of Grey is the fact that staff turnover is minimal. Me Helene Cronje joined our staff this year and we wish her well.
Mnr Pierre Korkie het besluit om die onderwys vaarwel toe te roep en hy en sy gesin vertrek eersdaags na Yemen. Ons bid hulle die beskerming en leiding van die Here toe!

Elke onderwyser doen meer as wat van hom of haar verwag word en ons matriekuitslae bewys dat hulle die kerntaak aan hulle opgedra, uitvoer. Voeg daarby die insette wat hulle in die koshuise en op buitemuurse gebied lewer, en ons het veel om voor dankbaar te wees!

The school management team consisting of the Deputies, mr Tommie Cronje and mr Dries van der Wal, and the Heads of Department ensures the smooth running of the day to day activities of the school and the implementation of the different curricula.

Mevv Annemarie Hollenbach, Elsie Geeringh en Juanita Nel is as sekretaresses vir die skool n groot aanwins en doen hul veeleisende werk met n glimlag.

THE GREY GENTLEMEN

Grey is a special place because of the extraordinary young men who attend this school! large the Grey gentlemen do the right thing and make us proud. They are indeed a special breed who understand and live the Grey Way!

Riaan Britz, Pieter Rademan and Francois Venter were exceptional leaders and were well supported by the prefects, class captains and the matrics.

ACADEMICS

Our core business must always be the academic development of the Grey learners. We work diligently, but there is always room for improvement and we should never be satisfied with the status quo!

Ons matrieks het einde 2008 skitterend presteer. Grey se uitslae in die Senior Sertifikaat eksamen besorg aan die skool n plek in die top 5 skole in die Vrystaat en ook die trofee vir die beste Skeinat/Wiskunde uitslae.

Greyseuns het goed gevaar in Expo’s, Olimpiades en Nautilus Wiskunde.

BUITEMUURSE AKTIWITEITE

Die samehorigheidsgevoel en lojaliteit van die Grey familie, asook die gebalanseerde opvoeding wat ons nastreef, word elke jaar versterk deur die buitemuurse program van die skool.

Elke seun moet aan een somer- en een winteraktiwiteit deelneem en die seuns wat hierdie instruksie verontagsaam, doen nie net die skool n onreg aan nie, maar hulself, want hulle ontneem hulself die geleentheid om deel te wees van iets groter as hulself.

Our educators are all involved in extra mural activities and we express our gratitude to them and to all “outsiders” who share their expertise and give their time to serve our school!

We also express our sincere gratitude to all our SPONSORS who make it possible for us to compete all over South Africa! Without our sponsors we would lose our competitive edge!


SPORT

Grey se sport is van hoogstaande gehalte en ons seuns kompeteer teen die bestes in die land en ook oorsee. Ons probeer aan elke seun die geleentheid bied om deel te neem en goeie afrigting te ontvang. As ons net n topspan in elke ouderdomsgroep in die veld kon stoot, sou ons nie meer n faktor wees om mee rekening te hou nie.

HOCKEY

The 1st X1 as unbeaten and played scintillating hockey, especially against Paul Roos. Hendri Kroukamp and Otto Bam were selected for the National u17 training squad. Mr Braam van Wyk took over as coach from mr Des Donald and we are fortunate to have coaches of such calibre available.

ATLETIEK

Grey se atlete het besonder goed gevaar op byeenkomste by Affies, Paul Roos, Sentraal se Top 20 en die Grey/Oranje Clover byeenkoms. 13 van ons atlete het aan die SA’s deelgeneem en Rynard van Rensburg, Sean de Klerk, Pieter Marx en Charl Grobler het op nasionale en internasionale vlak presteer. Die Grey/ABSA byeenkoms was ook n hoogtepunt.

CRICKET

Rain affected the season but the 1stX1 nevertheless played well at the Grey PE festival, the St Davids 20/20 tournament and the Michaelmas Week. We have an abundance of talent available and must ensure the development of every cricketer.

FIETSRY

Grey se jaarlikse prestige fietsren geborg deur Discovery Health bygestaan deur Kloppers, Sportsmans Warehouse en King Kong het 543 inskrywings gelok. Tydens interskole het ons fietsryers puik gevaar.

SQUASH

Grey ended 3rd in the Top Schools Tournament in Pietermaritzburg and won the Saints Invitation Tournament. Paul Roderiques won the SA Schools tournament and he and Jan-Louis Reynders were invited to the Capeblue tournament. Jason Long was selected for the SA u14 team which competed in Malaysia.

We appreciate the contributions by Pine Pienaar(Adidas), Jock Relling. Marleze van Rhyn and Van Rensburg Pathologists.

GHOLF

Grey se spanne eindig 1ste, 2de en 3de in die Bloemfontein Liga en verloor net een uit agt interskole. Verskeie toere is onderneem en daar is in n aantal groot toernooie deelgeneem.

Ons waardeer Leisure Holdings en Golf Connexion se bydraes tot ons gholf.

RUGBY

Die eerstespan, geborg deur MR PRICE, speel puik rugby en verloor slegs teen Paul Roos(9-3). Grey lewer 6 SA Skole spelers op, nl Carl Wegner, Riaan Britz, Pieter Rademan(kaptein), Jean Cook, Piet Lindeque en Vlooi Klotze. Die Cherries, geborg deur WIEHAHN, en die o16’s het ook n skitterseisoen beleef. Op o14 en o15-vlak moet hard gewerk word!

SKAAK

Grey seskaak gaan van krag tot krag. 20 skole en 45 spanne het aan Grey en STANDARD BANK se uitnodigingstoernooi deelgeneem. In die plaaslike liga het Grey se juniorspanne deurgedring na die Topskole toernooi vir provinsiale spanne en puik gevaar.

Tydens die skool se verjaarsdag is n buitelugskaakbord en skaakstukke ingewy. Dit is geskenk deur mev Hester van Biljon, namens haar vader, James Veitch wat in 1944 gematrikuleer het.

SOCCER

The first team toured to Holland, Belgium and France and gained valuable experience. They also participated in 4 tournaments and acquitted themselves well.

Grey successfully hosted the Engen Knockout Challenge and the Grey/FNB Tournament. We appreciate the input of FNB and Engen, as well as the sponsorship of MR PRICE. 2010 will undoubtedly provide further impetus to our soccer!

SWEM

Die Greygala geborg deur ABSA was n hoogtepuntwaartydens 4 rekords verbeter is.Grey eindig 2de tydens die Westville Aflosgala en wen die skole afdeling by die Midmar Myl.

Tydens Interhoer wen Grey al die trofee en 16 Greyseuns verteenwoordig die Vrystaat op die SA Skolebyeenkoms waar veral Albert Bornman en Reynard Wessels uitblink.

TAFELTENNIS

Grey se tafeltennistoernooi is goed ondersteun. n Aantal Greyseuns het in Beijing en Shangai afrigting ontvang en deelgeneem. Grey se eerstespan wen al hul Interskole wedstryde en die plaaslike liga. Hydro Gastehuis word bedank vir hul borgskap.

TENNIS

2009 was a year of growth and development. The young 1st team showed great potential. Ludick Schlebusch and Leon Oberholzer were selected for the SA u18 side, Roland Berry for the u15 side and Theo Ferreira obtained his Junior Protea clours when he played in the Junior Tennis World Cup.

WATERPOLO

Met ITEC as hoofborg kon ons n uiters geslaagde toernooi aanbied vir 14 senior skoolspanne en in die 4de kwartaal vir 20 o14 spanne. Die 1ste, o14 en o15 spanne het aan verskeie toernooie deelgeneem en hul goed gekwyt van hul taak.

STREET MILE

The street mile on Grey’s grounds is sponsored by SPORTSMAN’S WAREHOUSE and excellent runners were in action.

LANDLOOP

Ons landlopers presteer goed in die plaaslike liga en teen ander skole in die land.

OTHER ACTIVITIES

Grey boys also excel at sports not offered at school, eg judo, karate, equestrian sports and barefoot waterskiing. They can even obtain colours from the school if they perform at national level and are also involved in some or other school activity.


KULTUUR

MUSIEKFEES

Sonder FNB, BLOEMWATER en die KUNSTETRUST sou hierdie hoogtepunt van die jaar nie moontlik wees nie – ons waardeer hul bydraes!

Lize Beekman en Brandon October het luister aan die geleentheid verleen en die 3 vertonings was uitsonderlik. Ons bedank graag vir Petro Muller en Elbie Louw vir hul besondere insette!

GREY BAND

The band consists of 24 musicians and they obtained an A symbol at the Eisteddfod.

MARIMBA BANDS

Grey now boasts 3 marimba bands and they are often invited to perform at functions.

KOOR

Die koor bestaan uit 65 lede wat gereeld optree en groot sukses behaal, bv 2 A+ simbole by die Kunswedstryd.
Die hoogtepunt was toe die koor aangewys is as die algehele wenner van die nasionale ATKV Applous kompetisie vir minder ervare kore.

MUSIEK

Musiek kan as vak en ook buite-kurrikuler aangebied word en klavier en teorie, kitaar, perkussie en koperblaasinstrumente word aangebied.

INDOMITUS

We would like to thank Willem Oosthuysen for his tremendous role in the success of our prestige singing ensemble and wish him well for his overseas studies.

Indomitus obtained an A++ at the Eisteddfod and a gold award at the ATKV Applous competition for more advanced boys choirs.

ENSEMBLE

The ensemble is a credit to the school and obtained an A+ at the Eisteddfod. Their performance with the hip hop dancers at the Engen Knockout soccer challenge was a highlight.

GREY BOEREORKES

Hierdie orkes is aangewys as die beste boereorkes vir sekondere skole in SA en hulle is in aanvraag by talle funksies waar hulle optree, oa die Ficksburg Kersiefees.

STABILIS BOEREORKES

Hierdie orkes bestaan uit senior seuns en hou die skool se naam hoog by die talle geleenthede waar hulle optree.

GUMBOOT DANCERS

This group performed on various occasions, among others at some Confed soccer matches.

REDENAARS EN DEBAT

Daar is groeiende belangsellin vir hierdie aktiwiteite en Francois Venter is vanjaar aangewys as die algehele wenner van die ATKV se kompetisie vir Afrikaans Eerste Addisionele Taal.
Die debatspanne het al hul interskole gewen.

PUBLIC SPEAKING AND DEBATING

Tsepho Brand won the Dept of Education competition at provincial level and will compete in the National competition.
Our junior and senior debating teams were very successful in inter schools competitions.
David Langford was the best speaker of the Free State tournament and was elected captain of the Free State A team.

STABILIS

Our school newspaper has an editorial of 36 Grey boys and they publish an excellent newspaper every term.The paper won the national competition at the end of last year.

We thank Sobeth Bester, Hannes Pieterse, Andre Botha and Joe Venter for their professional advice!

ATKV JEUGBERAAD

Vier Gr 11 leerders van Grey het hierdie beraad by Buffelspoort bygewoon en baie daarby gebaat.

KATEGESE

Ons dank aan al die kategete en die NGK van Bloemfontein Wes wat dit vir ons kosgangers moontlik maak om by die skool klas te ontvang.

VCSV

Ons kosgangers se geestelike lewe is in bekwame hande en interessante byeenkomste word weekliks gehou. Die Brak-en Duck kamp saam met Oranje was n groot sukses.
Die VCSV het deur middel van fondsinsamelings R30 000 vir n kinderkamer by die Universitas Hospitaal ingesamel.

VOORTREKKERS

Provinsiale kampe is bygewoon asook n kommandokamp te Doornkloof. Tans is daar min lede, maar daar is planne om die getaale te laat styg in 2010.

NAUTILUS WISKUNDE

Vier juniors en 2 Seniors is in die Vrystaatspan ingesluit.

INFORMATION & COMMUNICATION TECHNOLOGY

The Grey website is a primary source of information for the Grey family. It also includes an e-learning portal. Learners in gr 8&9 are involved in computer literacy classes and all Grey learners receive a free e-mail address.

Information Technology is offered as an extra subject in the FET phase and as from 2010 Computer Applications Technology will be offered as a subject in the FET curriculum.

KRAUSE LIBRARY

Dit is verblydend dat soveel seuns in die digitale era steeds lees en belangstel in nuus van die dag. Die biblioteek bied ook Internet fasiliteite en seuns kan inligting bekom vir take en projekte.

GREY ITEC GYM

There is a marked increase in individuals and teams that use the gymnasium.
The staff members in the gymnasium regularly attend courses and conferences and their input ensures that our sportsmen are well-conditioned and fit.

PVM se supplementasie is vir ons seuns baie werd en ons bedank Alfred Rheeder en sy span vir hul betrokkenheid by ons skool!

Ons waardeer ook ITEC se borgskap wat ons in staat stel om die gimnasium op professionele wyse te bedryf!

PSYCHOLOGICAL SERVICES

We have the services of an experienced educational psychologist available at school. Boys and parents can use these services regarding study methods, counselling, adaptation difficulties, subject- and career choices, etc.. Sport psychology is also available.

YOUTH WORKER

We have appointed a youth worker who is available for boys who would like to discuss matters concerning their everyday lives.

GREY TOGETHER KOFFIEWINKEL

Die koffiewinkel is by die museum en enige besoeker is welkom om hier etes en verversings in n gemoedelike atmosfeer te geniet.

GREY MUSEUM

The living legacy of Grey is available in the museum and the history of the school is on permanent display while the curator also keeps the Grey archive up to date.

KOSHUISE

Die koshuisseuns vorm n hegte eenheid tot voordeel van die skool en die seuns geniet n huislike atmosfeer. Dankie aan Mevv Van der Wal, Meyer en Machts wat as matrones werklik bemoeienis maak met die seuns in hul sorg. Die koshuispersoneel se insette word ook waardeer.

HAMILTONSAAL

Ons bedank mev Marie Booysen wat afgetree het vir jarelange diens en wens haar die bese toe vir die toekoms! Ons he took die hoogste waardering vir die dienste van mev Lena Greyvensteyn en haar personeel wat daagliks 3 etes aan 350 seuns voorsit. Sy sal voortaan die geweldige taak van voorraadbeampte van die skool, die terrein en die koshuise op haar neem en ons weet ons voorraad is in bekwame hande.

We welcome mrs Annette Marais from Pienaar Caterers in Hamilton Hall and know that our boarders will enjoy delicious meals!

TUCKSHOP

Die seuns waardeer hierdie kuierplek waar mev Hilda Rudd hulle trakteer op eet-en drinkgoed en waar hulle gemoedelik verkeer.

GROUNDS AND BUILDINGS

Messrs Chris Hollenbach, Ters Snyman, Ernie Brown, Jaco Pretorius and our ground staff keep our estate in excellent condition and we are proud to welcome visitors to Grey.

Our facilities are unparalleled and our boys are privileged to be able to use such facilties.

FINANCES

We thank mr Pieter Herbst for his services and welcome mr Nico Maritz as his successor. The work done by him, mrs Annalie Cronje and mrs Judie Marais is absolutely essential and their professional approach is an asset to Grey! Mr Neville van Niekerk serves as the chairperson of the SGB and his expertise is appreciated!

Ons skoolgeld en koshuisgeld is meer billik as enige vergelykbare skool s’n en derhalwe kan ons n beroep doen op ons ouers om dit gereeld te betaal – Grey bied absolute waarde vir geld!

BEHEERLIGGAAM

Die Beheerliggaam van Grey met mnr Philip Piek as voorsitter en mnr Jan Berry as ondervoorsitter dien die skool se belange op besondere wyse en verdien lof vir hul wyse raad, insig en begrip- sonder n sterk Beheerliggaam sou die skool moeilik aan sy doel kon beantwoord! Die verskillende subkomitees vergader gereeld en doen dan verslag aan die Beheerraad. Elke lid se onbaatsugtige bydraes word opreg waardeer!

GREY REUNIE

We congratulate the Reune on its 125th birthday and congratulate the chairperson, mr Dave Roberson, his vice chairperson, mr Stefan van Schalkwyk, and the committee members, on the excellent work they unselfishly do in the best interest of their alma mater. We also appreciate the friendly services of mrs Marieta vd Walt and me Bonita Burger.

Die 125 jaar van die Reunie word gevier in n pragboek wat pas verskyn het en geskryf is deur n oud-onderwyser, mnr Nic Fryer. Skaf dit gerus aan en geniet die “living legacy” van die Reunie!

OUERS

Die lof van ons lojale ouers kan nooit genoeg besing word nie – sonder u insette, ondersteuning en bydraes kan ons die skool se deure sluit!

Dankie aan ons ouerkomitees wat onbaatsugtig die beste belange van Grey dien en veral aan besoekende spanne en ouers ware Grey-vriendskap en –gasvryheid bied!

SUPPORTERS’ DECK

Our old boys and parents often get together at the Deck and strong bonds of loyalty and friendship are formed here. We appreciate the work done by the committee!

SECURITY

Under mr Hennie Nel and his team our security has gone from strength to strength and with the advent of cameras in and around the school we have managed to eradicate many problems.

GREY PRIMARY AND PRE-PRIMARY

We congratulate mr Lindsay Mould and his team on a very successful year and also appreciate their co-operation!

ONDERWYSDEPARTEMENT

Ons waardeer die samewerking, hulp en ondersteuning van die Onderwysdepartement en al die amptenare, veral mr Nkopane.

We wish the new MEC, Mr Makgoe, and the new Head of Education, Mr Malope, well in their new positions – you can rely on our support at all times!

SLOT

Ons almal wat met Grey te doen het, is bevoorreg en ons dank ons Skepper vir die geleenthede wat hy ons daagliks bied!
