Golf
Golf has been a popular activity at Grey College for many years. Currently there are 50 players that are actively participating in golf at school. The best golfer Grey has ever produced, must undoubtedly be Ian Palmer. He won several professional tournaments, of which his greatest victory was at the Johnny Walker Classic.
The golfers practise every Monday, Tuesday and Thursday at 14:30. The courses where they practise, are Schoemanpark and Bloemfontein. A weekly ranking is compiled, where the player’s stroke average is calculated. A player needs to play at least 54 holes to qualify for the rankings. Only official scores count towards the rankings. These include school practice rounds; league matches; interschools (when applicable); FS/NC junior tournaments; and all official junior tournaments. (No social round scores are acceptable).
There is a golf league for Bloemfontein schools, and Grey College has been the champion every year since the league’s induction in 1993. Grey College has five teams in the league (four senior teams and one junior team). Two league matches are played per term where the players play medal (stroke play), and the 4 best scores per team (a team consists of 6 players) count towards the league. League matches are played during terms 1 to 3. The top ten league players are chosen to represent Southern Free State in a friendly match against Northern- and Eastern Free State.
